Title Sequence Clips

    Before watching the title sequences/ opening scenes of the movies I already knew that like other things such as essays, novels and other things introductions usually are put in place to inform readers/ viewers  on whatever that story is going to be about. However, after watching the clips and taking notes and going over them in class it made me realize how much I was missing from opening scenes in movies that you must be able to recognize to see them. Also, I saw how opening scenes show a lot of what will happen during a film, but they also included foreshadowing and other hints to what specific things are going to happen within a film. Some exceptional examples of successful opening scenes would be from the movie “Scream” in which the opening scene you see the girl on the phone with a creepy stranger and gets terrorized by him. This opening scene was successful because it not only gave the viewers an insight on what the film would be like, but I would like to note that it was also very entertaining as well. “Jaws” was another movie that excelled in the same area showing the girl get attacked by the shark was showing what the rest of the movie was going to be about. Another important part in film is having a relevant title picture because when people look at what movies are playing the first thing; they see is the picture. One person who was exceptional at doing this was Kyle Cooper. One of Cooper’s greatest works came from a movie called “Se7en” in this movie’s opening scene Cooper was able to create opening sequences that would tap the heart of the film’s theme and subtext. What this means is that Cooper was able to give viewers a taste of what was coming in the movie within the opening sequence. Another person who was exceptional at creating titles was Anthony Battaglia. Anthony explained the affect that titles are supposed to have by saying the best film typography isn't superfluous or incongruous, but fundamentally helps to tell the story. You can see this within movies such as “2001 Space Odessey” within the opening scene you see space and the sun rising behind the earth which gives off an astrology feel which helps gives viewers an idea on what's to come. Another good example of this would be from the movie “Dazed and Confused” in the opening scene of the movie they use big and wavy lettering to give it a funkier feeling. And in “She’s Gotta Have It” they show photos of old normal New York through the eyes of person living there.
